HILL DISPLAY PRIZE WON Great Northern Announces Award of Trophies Prinevllle, Bend and Madras Are Prominent Amonj Victors. Oregon's Rfcneral display at the recent Iry Farming Congress held at Billings, Mont., was the best and the state has ren awarded a silver cup for Its ex hibit. Considering that Oref?on"s exhibits Were gathered in haste, the state's vic tory in regarded as an extraordinary dis tinction. Prizes won at the congress are the sub ject of a communication received yes terday by officials of the Great Northern here. The report follows: "James J. Hill, chairman of the board of directors of the Great Northern, of fered $1000 In cash prizes and several Filver cups for agricultural products grown along the line of the Great Northern Railway in Oregon, Washing ton and Montana. Through the efforts of the traffic department of the Great Northern In Portland, an exhibit was secured from the territory contiguous to the line building in Central Oregon, and the following prizes were awarded, some being Dry Farming Congress trophies and others Hill special prizes: Alfalfa seed, R. M. Powell, Prinevllle, J. J. Hill, first. Alfalfa seed, R. M. Powell, Prinevllle, dry farming congress, first. Colored oats. J. H. Kato, Bend, dry farm ing congress, first. Colored oats. H. J. Healy, Madras, dry farming congress, second. Winter rye, II. J. Healy, Madras, J. J. Hill, llrst. Potatoes, G. Springer. Culver, J. J. Hill, second. Irish barley, C. ft. The exhibits were gathered on short notice and would have been much greater in quantity and better In character had more time been afforded. J. M. Hunter and W. H. Staats, of Bond, say greater enthusiasm has been aroused in Central Oregon as a result of the awards and that farmers and grow ers would be ready with a fine exhibit for next year's congress, which is to be held at Spokane. It is understood Mr. Hill will offer at least as many special : prizes rrext year for products grown within 25 miles of a line of the Great Northern. "Mr. Hunter says the Dry Farming Congress did & great deal for the Des chutes Valley on account of visitors seeing the products of Oregon that in quiries are pouring in from homeseekers, who either saw the exhibits or heard of them from their friends." - "Air. Hopkinson" -Show of fconson. The Portland Theater was filled last eve ning with a representative audience of Port land's best class of theater-goers, and the reception accorded "Mr. Hopkinson" was of a kind that must have elated the hearts of every member of the clever company of English players that Is presenting "the smartest show in town." Another matinee Saturday. The Great Calcedo at Orpheura. Known throughout two continents as "the King of the Wire." the great Calcedo Is on the bill at the Orpheum this -week.
